This coaster is made using the Kumiko method, an ancient Japanese woodworking tradition. Kumiko is a method of joining small segments of wood piece by piece to create a pattern without using nails.
In Japan, the "Asanoha Kumiko" (Hemp Leaf) pattern has been used since ancient times on baby clothes and other objects to wish long life and happiness.
